Mission Statement

Dragons Abreast is a team of breast cancer survivors. The purpose of our team is:

  • to encourage those living with breast cancer to lead full and active lives;
  • to demonstrate the overwhelming benefits of exercise for those recovering from breast cancer;
  • to raise awareness about breast cancer and the fact that there are many people living full and active lives following breast cancer.

Description

This is an exercise and rehabilitation program for breast cancer survivors in the form of a dragon boat team. Their mission is to encourage people who have breast cancer to lead full and active lives by improving their physical and psychological well-being. Their purpose is to provide survivors with a strong message of hope, inspiration and encouragement. Weekly practices and competitions in dragon boat festivals provide members with opportunities for fitness and camaraderie.

Qualifying Criteria

Women and men of all ages and physical ability who have had breast cancer.

New paddlers are always welcome – no previous experience with dragon boating necessary.

Location and Hours

Sunnyside Paddling Club: Lake Ontario

1775 Lake Shore Blvd W., Toronto ON

Hours may vary. Currently on-water training is on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, with an optional Saturday morning practice.

Fees

Yearly membership fees apply. Fundraising helps to keep the fees as low as possible.

Dragons Abreast Toronto is proud to be members of the International Breast Cancer Paddlers Commission. The IBCPC’s mandate is to encourage the establishment of breast cancer dragon boat teams, within the framework of participation and inclusiveness. The Commission supports the development of recreational dragon boat paddling as a contribution to a healthy lifestyle for those diagnosed with breast cancer.
